The availability of healthcare facilities in São Tomé and Príncipe is very limited. This entails the need for evacuation to other countries such as South Africa, Ghana or Europe to pursue medical facilities. There is one private medical centre and two hospitals known in São Tomé and Príncipe, of which facilities are limited. 

When travelling to São Tomé and Príncipe which underlining health conditions, it is advisable to ensure adequate travel medical insurance and have access to funds in case of the need to evacuate due to a medical emergency.

There is a serious shortage of physicians available in the Portuguese-speaking nation of São Tomé and Príncipe, leading to the lack of medical facilities. 

Information for Travelers 
It is advisable to contact your general practitioner up to 8 weeks in advance of your trip to São Tomé and Príncipe. Recommended vaccinations prior to travelling include tetanus, typhoid, hepatitis A and rabies. Even though malaria is thought to be eradicated, it is advisable to take daily antimalaria tablets.
